Gulmarg Golf Club
Gulmarg is India's most famous mountain golf course: founded in 1890, redesigned by Peter Thomson in 1970 and again by Ranjit Nanda in 2011, it sits at about 2,650 m in the Gulmarg meadow — cited as the second-highest green golf course in the world and, at 7,505 yards, the longest course in India (par 72). It is a tourism-department/JKTDC-run asset, playable roughly April to November; in winter the meadow is a ski resort, so the season matters as much as any opening hours. Sources disagree on some basics: JKTDC's own golfing page dates the club to 1911 (Wikipedia says 1890), calls it the highest green course in the world (Wikipedia says second highest), and prints a 6,760-yard card against Wikipedia's and Kashmir Images' 7,505 yards; the 7,505 figure has two sources behind it, with JKTDC's shorter card standing as an open conflict. Who actually operates the course is not stated by any source found — JKTDC promotes and books it, and the Tourism Department runs events at it, but neither page claims to run it. The honest caveat is condition: a June 2025 Kashmir Images report describes years of neglect ("virtually turned into a desert") with a revival underway — nine holes playable then, the remaining nine promised within months, and the Chief Minister stating the course would be fully restored by end-2025 to host championships. An August 2026 tourism-department news item (echoed by Rising Kashmir a day later) still lists it among J&K's flagship golf assets, but neither says the course is currently playable and no source confirms all 18 holes are back in play. No current green fees, phone, or website were found in citable sources; travel-agency pages quote "approximately" ₹800/₹1,200 and a daily 8:30am–10:00pm opening, but those figures are undated and not credible, so they are best ignored.
