Shillong Golf Club
This is the "Gleneagles of the East": an 18-hole, par-70 course among pines and rhododendrons at nearly 5,000 feet in the middle of Shillong, begun by British civil servants in the 1890s, expanded to eighteen in 1924, and still hosting a 100-player state invitational in May 2025. It is one of the very few courses in India whose grounds are genuinely public — walkers share the space, and the club arranges rounds with rented equipment for visiting players, sorted out at the clubhouse.

More detail
What we knowEverything on file, and what the sources disagreed about
Shillong Golf Club plays the famous "Gleneagles of the East" — an 18-hole, par-70 course set among pines and rhododendrons at about 4,750–5,200 feet in the middle of Shillong, begun as 9 holes by British civil servants (1898 per most sources, 1878 per the Shillong Club's own page) and expanded to 18 in 1924. It is among the oldest courses in India and one of the very few where the grounds are genuinely public — walkers and picnickers share the space, and the club arranges rounds with equipment rental for visiting players. Management is muddled in public sources: the Shillong Club's website claims the course is owned by The Shillong Club, while travel sources simply credit a "Shillong Golf Club"; both club-affiliated web pages carry theme-placeholder US-format contact details, which are not repeated here (as of August 2026 the Shillong Club page still prints a Boston- format number and a WordPress-demo email, and the shillong.com portal a New Hampshire- format number). The Shillong Club's own contact page does, however, carry one deliberately filled contact block — an Indian-format mobile (6009621305) and shillongclub@rediffmail.com, alongside the club's Mahatma Gandhi Road address — worth noting with caution, since the surrounding site is stale and nothing independent corroborates it. Yardage is also disputed (5,873 vs 6,081 yards). A 100-player state invitational tournament concluded here in May 2025 — re-verified in August 2026 via the Sentinel Assam report — so the course is clearly operating.
