The base of the hills has the championship test: Coimbatore Golf Club at Chettipalayam, par 72 with Bermuda greens the club says run to 10.5, where a walk-in round with a handicap certificate is a published ₹4,000 + GST. Six thousand feet up, the Wellington Gymkhana — a garrison club since 1873 beside the Defence Services Staff College — documents its way in unusually well: ₹800 + GST as a member's guest, ₹200 a day with an affiliated club's letter, or a one-to-three-month temporary membership for the travelling golfer.
