Jorhat Gymkhana Club
Jorhat Gymkhana Club, built in 1876 by D. Slimmons on Club Road in Jorhat, holds a frequently repeated claim to fame: its 9-hole golf circuit is cited (by the Asia records body Worldkings, among others) as the oldest golf course in Asia. The gymkhana is a classic tea-planter institution — horse racing, polo, tennis, cricket (its ground has hosted CK Nayudu Trophy matches), a pool and snooker alongside the golf — and the course still hosts the Governor's Cup. The district administration lists it as a tourist attraction — and, in a claim found nowhere else, says the golf course was expanded to 18 championship holes in 1995; Wikipedia and other sources still describe a 9-hole circuit, so the hole count is disputed, with 9 the better-supported figure. The club publishes nothing itself: no par or yardage, no prices, no phone, email, website, or social accounts, and visitor access terms are unknown, so it is treated as a members' club. The newest dated evidence found is a September 2024 feature article, so nothing newer confirms it is currently operating, despite the club's institutional permanence.
